Suggested San Pedro Sula Hotels and Hostels

We’ve included this information on where to stay in La Ceiba as part of our webiste www.UtilaGuide.com because many visitors to Utila stop over in one La Ceiba coming in or out of Utila. (See also our link to Hotels in San Pedro).

La Ceiba is a fairly centralized city, and easy to get around via taxi.  It is generally considered safe to walk at day, but at night, a taxi is highly recommended. Note that you should not drink the water out of the tap in Honduras- for new travellers, even brushing your teeth with tap water may be an option to avoid! Purified water is almost always availalable- ask! Also, for a bit of a treat, take a look at the Forest Lodging in La Ceiba we have below. Combinining a few nights in the forests off La Ceiba in combination with your Utila island trip allows you for both mountains and the Caribbean sea.

Note: This list is not exhaustive and is not meant to be; its simply  hotels or hostels we have either personally stayed at, or have gotten positive reviews from others. If you have a hotel to suggest or have had problems with one of the below, please write us at our Contact Page so we can make note of it. For more information on La Ceiba, take a look here:

Hotels are listed by price, least expensive first

Hostal Las Guacamayas
A clean safe budget option in La Ceiba, offering 3 co-ed dorm rooms and 1 private room. Hot water, clean bathrooms, shared TV area. Located at Barrios solares nuevos, avenida colon, between 12 y 11 calle, house No. 252. Just 3 blocks away from Central Park, next to the Super Baleada.

_________________________________________________________________________________________ Iberia Hotel
About $25usd, in town. A favorite spot of many local Bay Islanders. Friendly service and clean air-conditioned rooms with private hot water bathrooms make the Iberia a good choice for those on the cusp of budget and midrange. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the street, which lends some natural light, but the traffic noise starts pretty early. Internet and banks are steps away, food and nightlife just a bit further. Hotel Contracho
Suggested by sailor Julie in Roatan who have stayed there over the past 3 years, with the following comments: “Local hotel that is inexpensive and clean.500 lemps (about $30usd) for a room with 2 double beds, a little fridge, A/C, cable TV, private bath with shower and a little swimming pool. It’s not the Ritz. Sometimes the neighborhood, including the hotel, doesn’t have hot water, so if that’s important, ask before you pay for a room. Laundry service available and there’s a little restaurant in the lobby which serves good inexpensive local food”  Located on the same block as the MediCentro, and just down the block from from the Canadian owned  American Ex-Pat’s bar so you can walk to a decent inexpensive dinner and a few brews.”   … We also found that the rooms with 1 Queen bed seemed a bit nicer than those with 2 beds…Service can be hit or miss with the front desk, but the cleaning staff and woman running the restaurant are very nice.

Gran Hotel Paris:
Center of town, just off the town park. This is a clean, safe, nicer hotel in La Ceiba, with pool and bar for about $40-70 USD per night. Restaurant on site and room service available. Update: Some of the rooms are a little older, and some rooms are getting a bit run down, so you may want to look at the room first. Also, some folks have mentioned that the prices are going up so its getting a little pricey for what you get. If you get one of the newer rooms, its a good option and one used by many Bay Islanders and expats.

Speciality Forest Lodging in La Ceiba:

The next two lodgings we are especially fond of- and suggest considering spending a day or two at one in conjunction with your trip to Utila. This will give you a great combination of the forests and oceans of Honduras! The map below shows a nice depiction of location in relation to La Ceiba.

**Omega Lodge
Located just off the Rio Cangrejal next to about a 25 minute (and $25usd) cab ride from La Ceiba, Omega Lodge is a great bet.  On grounds that used to be an old fruit orchard, they have a variety of lodging, from budget dorm rooms to beautiful cabins with private bath that can sleep one couple upstairs and one downstairs. There is also a cabin right over the river with a shared bath. Excellent restaurant (Karen of Casa Cangrejal below runs their kitchen and makes wonderful desserts too!) with full bar.  The focus of Omega Tours is their activities, but they’ve built this beautiful property “on the side” and their nicer rooms are a reall treat. All activities can be arranged- hiking, rafting, kayaking, lagoon tours, etc. This is a great spot for a get-away. Tell Udo you heard about it from Andi and Brad at Utila Guide!

**Casa Cangrejal
Great B&B located in the forest about 25 minutes outside La Ceiba, bordering the Pico Bonito national park and following the road up the Rio Cangrejal, just next to Omega Lodge above. All rooms have private bath and hot water, and wireless internet connection. The house is built entirely out of river rock, and the fresh water creek behind the house is a wonderful place to relax and read in the chairs or hammocks. They work with the local outfitters at Omega Lodge and can set you up with kayaking, hiking, horseback riding, bird watching, canopy tours and lagoon tours.   Full breakfast is included with fresh squeezed juices, fresh fruit. They can arrange a cab for you from town/airport for about $25usd. Really nice getaway with excellent hosts.  Doubles are $90usd, including breakfast. Tel Karen you heard about her through Utila Guide!

Cabañas del Bosque
A true community-run lodging which was created with the aim of encouraging conservation and ecotourism in the Rió Cangrejal Basin / Watershed through Gauruma Services. Beautiful natural surroundings provide the conditions for an unforgettable visit where you will encounter many native species of flora and fauna that form a large part of the Honduran ecosystem in the border area of Parque Nacional Pico Bonito.   A nice option for off the beaten path and to help support community life along the Rio Cangrejal. Private hot showers, meals servied, and full activities available. Located in the community of Las Mangas about 16 kms from the Soapin Bridge on the road leading through the Rìo Cangrejal Basin
