Utila has a range
of accommodations for every taste and budget, from backpacker's rooms to deluxe waterfront homes and all-inclusive
dive resorts.
(Click on the quick links below to search your
price range,
or just scroll down to view all.)
C
As
a general guideline, budget private rooms with shared cold water
bathrooms start at about 100 lempiras ($5.30 usd) single/130 lempiras
($7.00 usd) double. Add a few dollars for hot water. Basic
private rooms with private bathrooms start at about
$10 usd single/$12 usd double and add about $5usd for hot water.
Nicer more comfortable rooms with private hotwater bath will
run
from about $20
usd and up, and more upscale rooms will cost about $45 usd and up.
Many
of the dive shops offer discounted or even free rooms if you dive with
them. These are generally simpler accommodations, and while preference
is given to those diving with the associated shop, they may have space
for non-divers.
Despite
some old information on the web, Utila does indeed have 24 hour
electricity
now, though not all hotels will have a back up generator. AC
is
usually an option at all but the most budget of spots, but you will pay
extra and will need to ask in advance.
Availability
- Do I Need to Reserve in Advance?
You can generally
find a spot at anytime but the most busiest weeks. BUT,
if you want to be sure you have the same room for your entire
stay and/or want to stay at one of the more popular spots, you
should call or write ahead to reserve.
During holiday
weeks (Christmas, New Years, Semana Santa-the week
before Easter, and the first week of August with SunJam) the island
really does get completely full. During these weeks, we have seen more
folks arriving on Utila than there is space for, so plan in advance!
Many
folks come off the ferry and leave their bags at a nearby dive
shop (there are 5 with offices within
1 block of ferry dock) and then scout out your spot for the night.
Since most of the lodging spots are a quick walk from the
ferry, you can also find a hotel for the first night and then
take
some time the next day.
Contacting the Hotels
Note
that most of the smaller hotels / hostels will either not have email
addresses,
or if they do, they may not get checked regularly. Keep
in mind that most of the budget lodging options are local "mom and pop"
type operations, so you will have
better luck calling direct or just stopping in at arrival.
