Hey there! I plan on moving to Utila on Jan.1/2012.
I dont want to spend a lot of money on rent per month ($500 or less), and want to work over there. How long in advance would I need to book a place for that date?

Hello, I am currently searching for a single apt/room for a rate of $300 monthly (including utilities). My husband William will be traveling to the island to get a feel for it so that his experience will help aid in our decision to possibly move there.
We are trying to find something safe, clean, and definitely within our budget.
William will be arriving in Utila on April 9th, 10th, or 11th and will be staying approximately 1 year. Please send info as soon as possible, we have little time to spare. I appreciate your time and look forward to doing buisness with you. Thank you

Thanks for writing in- The folks at Utila Apartment Finders have changed hands and are now being handled by Mike and Jennie. They specialize in budget conscience travellers staying a week or longer, and have Utila apartments, houses, rooms starting at about $150 a week or $300 a month. Give them a call at 3-196-6049 or 3-362-3809 (call anytime) or email mikelatitude@yahoo.com. $300 usd would be on the low end, just to point out, and most spots don’t include utilities. If you can go up to $400 or $500 a month, you’ll fare much better. If calling from States, dial 011-504 and then the numbers above.
One other thing to think about: Semana Santa (Easter Week) is VERY busy here- you may want to try and come after that time (so come 1st of May) and you’ll probably find a lot more housing options.

Hi Matt- Wecome (almost!) to Utila! You can definately find rentals in that range…Work is a little more tricky- you technically need a work permit, but you will see expats in many of the bars and restaurants. Plan for about $15-20 usd per day in that field plus tips. There are also expats working as divemasters and instructors. Of coursre, you can always find a niche thats not here yet and create your own business! When you come, talk to the folks at Utila Realty (www.UtilaRealty.net) or stop in- they are next to Munchies restaurant, and they can give you information you need for starting a business.
For how far in advance- b.c that is Xmas/New Years, if you can wait just a few days you’ll probably fare much better. I would suggest contact Mike or Jennie above – the other option is to come and just get a place for a few days and then walk around and look at spots (you can do this with Mike or Jennie too) and then you can find the right spot for you. Hi- thanks for commenting- but UtilaGuide doesn’t actually do the rentals- we just are an information source for these folks (Utila Apartment Finders) and the other hotels and vacation rentals on this site.
